After an awards season in which the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were rarely mentioned, this year’s Oscars carpet included several reminders of the conflict. Some attendees donned pins or displayed other statements calling for a cease-fire in Gaza as demonstrations disrupted traffic outside. The documentary feature winner, “20 Days in Mariupol,” offered a grim reminder of that war’s toll on the country and its civilians. Costume designer Quita Alfred gave a masterclass in research when it came to Sarah Polley’s film, Women Talking. When it came to designing the costumes for the characters in the film, Alfred went straight to the source and learned from actual Mennonite communities to learn about and source fabrics.

Teams of designers working together have often won Oscars, as is sometimes required to dress the hundreds of extras required by an epic drama, or to create the intricately detailed gowns which dress up a musical. On other occasions, the winner designed and then oversaw the production of costumes by a team working underneath them. Sometimes the best solution is for a studio to work with a costume design firm.
Siobhán Cullen was the winner of this year’s Screen Ireland IFTA Rising Star Award. Ariana DeBose, who is the frontrunner for best supporting actress, may be helping Paul Tazewell, the first Black man ever to be nominated in this category. Signature outfits go far in this category and who can forget DeBose’s stunning yellow dress. Not to mention, Alexander Skarsgård’s berserker costume, countless viking costumes, the valkyrie look, and of course Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman). She also makes Oscar history by becoming the first Black woman to win twice in any Oscars category.

While Austin Butler gives an award-worthy performance, none of it would be possible without the incredible costumes designed by Catherine Martin. The silhouettes, fabrics, and color palettes are simply mesmerizing. When the Costume Design Oscar was first introduced, the first films eligible for consideration were those from 1948, separated into different categories for black-and-white films and those in color. This practice ended in 1967, when the separate categories merged into a single award for costume design, one for art direction and one for cinematography. Black-and-white film went out of style, and in this same year all major television networks also stopped broadcasting in monochrome during the prime time content slots. Carter previously won the same Oscar back in 2019, for Black Panther.
While Curtis has had a prolific career in film and television, making her an indelible Hollywood figure, this was her first Academy Awards nomination — and now, her first win. Midway through the speech, his co-stars told the audience that they wanted to sing him "Happy Birthday," and they did.
